What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a next-generation addressing system by the Department of Posts. It provides a unique, highly precise alphanumeric location code for every building and entrance in India, enabling faster and more accurate deliveries, emergency services, and geospatial applications.
Key Benefits
- Precision up to 4 square metres for any location
- Simplifies complex or incomplete addresses
- Works offline with simple alphanumeric codes
- Seamless integration with navigation systems
- Improves last-mile delivery accuracy
- Aids emergency response & disaster management
Implementation in Dhenkanal
Dhenkanal Postal Division is actively rolling out DIGIPIN across urban and rural areas. Citizens can soon find their unique DIGIPIN printed on doorstep cards and utility bills.
Postmen and GDS staff are being trained to record DIGIPIN codes for every delivery point, creating a comprehensive geospatial registry for the entire division.
How DIGIPIN Works
DIGIPIN encodes your latitude and longitude into a 10-character alphanumeric code using a hierarchical grid system across India.
India Grid
The country is divided into a 4×4 master grid covering lat 2.5°–38.5° and lon 63.5°–99.5°
10-Level Zoom
Each cell is recursively subdivided 10 times, each level adding one character to the code
Alphanumeric Code
16 characters (F,C,9,8,J,3,2,7,K,4,5,6,L,M,P,T) form the DIGIPIN alphabet
4 sq.m Accuracy
After 10 subdivisions, each cell is just ~2m×2m — precise enough for any entrance or door
